Global Climate and Land Use
Roughly 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions stem from unsustainable land use practices in forested and agricultural landscapes. Through this initiative, the Alliance aims to accelerate the implementation of international policies and financing, both public and private sector, that will promote the reduction of those emissions, protect the environment, and benefit people.
The Alliance’s Global Initiative includes five component strategies:
- Promoting sustainable land use practices by the private sector
- Supporting community ownership and management of forests
- Ensuring that REDD+ policies and financial instruments support substantial, permanent and additional reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from land use
- Building consensus on design and implementation of social and environmental safeguards for land use related climate policies
- Ensuring land use related climate policies benefit indigenous peoples and other local communities by recognizing their basic rights to informed consent and benefit sharing, and enhancing local livelihoods
