Why climate and land use?
Greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from deforestation, forest degradation and agricultural production account for approximately 20 percent of global emissions. Here’s how:
While forests store billions of tons of carbon, when they are destroyed or degraded, this carbon is released into the atmosphere as CO2
Crop and livestock production emit greenhouse gases from fertilizer application, heavy equipment use, and methane production. Agricultural expansion is also the major driver of deforestation.
Reducing emissions from deforestation, forest degradation and agricultural production is a key part of the global response to climate change. Yet, the growing global demand for food, fuel and fiber means that competition for land will increase pressure on remaining “high-carbon’ landscapes, including forests and peat lands. And climate change can have large, mostly negative, effects on the productivity of agricultural and forested landscapes.
What is the Climate and Land Use Alliance?
The Climate and Land Use Alliance is a collaborative initiative of the ClimateWorks Foundation, David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Ford Foundation and Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
The Alliance's mission is to realize the potential of forested and agricultural landscapes to mitigate climate change, benefit people, and protect the environment.
The Alliance’s strategy recognizes that:
- The global response to climate change will be unsuccessful without significant reductions in deforestation and forest degradation and improved agricultural practices
- To meaningfully reduce deforestation and enhance the ability of land to store carbon, we must address the forces that drive agricultural practices and expansion into forested areas, including the growing global demand for food, fuel and fiber
- Protecting and enhancing the livelihoods and rights of indigenous peoples and rural communities is an essential part of the solution
What does the Alliance do?
The Alliance makes grants and engages key stakeholders, policy-makers and experts to explore and develop solutions that:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation, forest degradation, and unsustainable agricultural practices
- Develop, implement, and finance low-carbon growth
- Protect the land and resource rights of indigenous peoples and rural communities
- Conserve natural landscapes
- Increase the efficiency and sustainability of agricultural practices
